EU Could Retaliate to ‘Unjustified’ US Visa Bans, Official Says

The EU might “act quickly and firmly” in response to what it calls “unjustified” travel bans imposed by the US against five European individuals involved in combating digital hatred and misinformation, a European Commission spokesperson stated.

European Leaders Decry US Move as ‘Intimidation’

Officials from Europe such as Emmanuel Macron accused Washington of “coercion and intimidation”, after the travel bans were placed on individuals who have been at the heart of efforts to enact laws governing American tech companies.

“For far too long, ideologues in Europe have spearheaded coordinated campaigns to coerce US companies to suppress US perspectives they oppose,” wrote a senior US official online. “The current administration will not stand for these egregious acts of censorship beyond its borders.”

Widespread Condemnation From EU Nations

Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives supported the French president in criticizing the move.

The bans were enacted this week against a former EU commissioner involved in crafting the bloc’s Digital Services Act (DSA), as well as four anti-disinformation campaigners, including Germany and the United Kingdom.

An Escalating Conflict Over Regulation

The DSA is viewed by US officials as a form of censorship, while EU authorities contend the regulations are necessary to control inflammatory language and disinformation.

This disagreement threatens to become part of a far wider existing political and ideological clash involving the current US administration and Europe.
